Residential Plumbing

Residential plumbing includes water, pipes, and drain lines to different fixtures and appliances: sinks, showers, toilets, dishwashers, washing machines, sump pumps, sewage pumps, water softeners, etc. 

It encompasses homes with municipal water and wastewater service, single-family dwellings, townhomes, seasonal residences and cottages with septic systems, condominiums, and apartment buildings, etc.

The main water line connects a residence to the municipal water service at the property line. This line brings in all the water that feeds all of the appliances and fixtures in your home.

A water meter attached to the main water line measures how much water is used in a given period of time for monthly billing by the city. 

Residential plumbing also extends to electric hot water tanks, sump pumps, sewage pumps, hot water recirculating pumps, floor drains, and clean-outs for drain cleaning and snaking, etc. 

Residential drain lines connect to the main sewer line, which connects to the municipal sewer system at the property line.

Sometimes new plumbing will be required to accommodate an appliance that isn’t the same size as the previous one. This can happen if you’re moving to a different residence or purchasing and installing a new appliance. A different spot in the room may also require changes to existing plumbing.

Older plumbing lines and fittings can become problematic. Poly B lines and fittings tend to leak and create water damage. They were used from the 1970s to 1995.

Sometimes there are galvanized pipes and joints, particularly in older homes. These silver grey coloured metal pipes and fittings can break down over time, clog the inside of the pipe, and potentially place your drinking water at risk for toxins.

Lead plumbing is another bad one. It can exist in some older homes and buildings that were established before 1950. Lead contamination can cause major health conditions such as kidney damage, headaches, high blood pressure, and more. 

Sometimes the repair work can be major – if there is a blockage or a problem in the sewage line and excavation work is required, Plumbtech can help coordinate it, if needed. 

Major renovations may require multiple skill sets, such as tile work. Plumbtech is often asked for

Some of the most popular renovation projects range from adding a washroom to the basement to making changes or additions to the kitchen, installing new appliances, and sump pumps, etc.

Homes and cottages on septic systems may also need a sewage pump in the basement.
