Pipes, Pipes, Pipes

Just as there is a variety of pipe sizes commonly found in residential plumbing, pipes of different materials are also used in industry. They are the transportation system for a wide variety of substances that are necessary for chemical plants, refineries, pharmaceutical facilities, food
processing, and more. Substances can range from water, gases, steam, air, coolants, chemicals, petroleum products, and more.

Piping for Water

Different types of materials are used for water lines and fittings. They can range from plastic, copper, or municipex, or poly piping and CPVC pipe. Fitting materials are also different and require different techniques and expertise to be attached. Copper fittings, for example, are soldered, whereas CPVC fittings are glued. What to use depends on the application of the water systems involved and where it will be used. Plumbing on the second floor, or attic, has considerations beyond plumbing water to fixtures, including drain pipes, venting, and access.

Piping for Air

Some of the businesses that use air pipes include body shops, car washes, sheet metal shops, automobile shops, and other facilities that deal with heavy machinery. Process Piping

Primarily used in industrial or manufacturing plants, process piping is a way of moving various fluids and/or gases through a building to its destination, such as a machine to make a product. Process piping keeps all of the substances used separated from each other. The type of piping, valves, and fittings used depends upon the substance inside the pipe.

Substances can range from water to chemicals, gases, petroleum products, steam, air, refrigerants, and more. Process piping is also used for injection molding, a manufacturing process that sends a liquid or melted substance into a mould to make a product or a variety of parts.
In addition to transporting the substances from one location to another in the plant, the pipe system can also be designed to mix, pressurize, control, and regulate whatever is in the pipe for its destined purpose.

In a car wash, for example, pipes separate the soaps from the waxes and rinses. Different pipes are used for each. In a plant that uses injection molding to make a product, different pipes would transport water or chemicals to a machine in the plant. The pharmaceutical industry will also use process piping systems to manufacture products.

Piping for Use

The type of pipe used depends on what is going through it and where it is located (above ground or underground). Varying temperatures, determined by the manufacturer, engineer, or designer of the system, will also be a factor.

Also, different pipes and fittings will be used according to the machine substance, fluid, or gas that is being used. Various pipes are also made from different materials and thicknesses depending on the substance that is travelling through them. Types of Pipes

Materials range from steel to copper and plastic. Within each, there are different options. Steel, for example, has three different options: carbon, stainless, and alloy. While carbon steel will work for many different general-purpose applications, it may also be prone to corrosion.

Alloy steel is frequently used in chemical and petrochemical institutions as it can withstand high temperatures and pressure. That is because alloy steel is made by combining carbon steel with chromium, molybdenum, and nickel. It is also less prone to corrosion. Copper piping is available in various thicknesses depending on where it is used and what substance is running through it. Uses include water plumbing, where it is soldered to fittings and fixtures such as taps and water heaters. Plastic piping is made from a wide variety of materials, such as PVC, CPVC, and PEX piping. All are flexible, but there are differences, particularly in how the piping joins together.
