Is it two – bathroom and kitchen? Three – with a utility /laundry sink?
More often than not, there are more. How many depends on the size of the house, the number of occupants, if there is a two-piece bath (most often used for guests), an outdoor sink, a garage sink, or another residential space in the house such as a basement apartment or in-law unit. It could also be a separate building on the same property, such as a garden suite.
Many sinks are available in the same style as the kitchen. A drop-in sink has to be the same size and shape as the one being removed. An undermount sink is another option, frequently used in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
Other models in the bathroom could be a pedestal design or a vessel sink. A pedestal sink only uses a minimal amount of space but has a disadvantage in that there is no storage. A vessel sink sits on top of the counter and may have storage if there is a cabinet or shelving underneath. Additional sink options beyond the kitchen feature a wall-mounted variety, and there is a barrier-free/accessible model too. A trough sink may contain more than one faucet, which allows two or more people to use it at the same time.
A mop or laundry sink may be located in the basement or near a washing machine or a utility room. There are also a variety of different models, such as dog washing stations, which make it easier to look after your four-legged residents.
Smaller sinks are frequently used in a home bar or a corner where there is limited space. They may also be used for extra food/party prep in a rec room and/or washing glasses.
Some rooms, such as the master bedroom, may have an ensuite bathroom which incorporates two sinks, often in one long counter space, for couples.
Some home-based businesses that prepare food, make it, or preserve it to sell at local markets or for catering purposes may need a more specialized sink, such as a three-compartment design or workstation sink. These sinks may also include a drying tray, colander, drain rack, cutting board, and a built-in ledge to hold accessories.
Are there Canadian-made sinks?
With the current climate being what it is, many people are making an effort to shop Canadian. Did you know that there are sinks made in Canada, and many local retailers carry them?
Current sinks are available in colours and materials beyond traditional white. There are a variety of different shades: bone, beige, or biscuit. While the solid colour sinks of the old days may not be back in style, colour does make a return in new ways, with shades of turquoise and even floral designs, sometimes incorporating glass. Black, charcoal, and copper are also on trend for this year.
How do you know when a sink needs to be replaced?
While most sinks can last for years without a problem, particularly stainless steel, there may come a time when it needs to be updated.
Issues such as chips or cracks accelerate the need to replace a sink. In addition to appearance, leaks may occur.
Stains, rust, or corrosion may play a role. Do you have hard water? If there are leaks, has mold or mildew set in? Sometimes a sink will become unstable or loose.
What if it frequently clogs or the sink is draining slowly? That can easily occur when soap, toothpaste, and hair coagulate into an ugly gunk that builds up in the drain.
