Does your kitchen sink need a refresh?

Exhibition of new kitchen sinks

Is your sink looking a little worse for wear? Is it stained or chipped? Do you have drainage problems? Slow or clogged drains?

Perhaps you’re just tired of looking at your old/current one and are looking for a change?

Then it might be time for a new one.

What kind of sink will you choose?

If you’ve started mulling over some of the newest styles and colours, give some thought to size, shape, and weight. Will it go into the same space or will it mean a retrofit of your plumbing?

If the replacement sink isn’t the same size, adjustments will need to be made to the counter. A new location in the kitchen or creating an island will definitely require new plumbing.

If you are considering a granite or marble sink, there will need to be substantial support to hold the weight.

Otherwise, a drop-in sink makes for an effortless transition, particularly if it is the same size and shape. The lip of the sink holds it in position.

Of all the different designs, stainless steel is the most common and the most popular. Finishes include brushed satin and/or black. Styles range from ‘drop-in’ sink to an ‘undermount’, ‘farmhouse’, bar, and/or outdoor sinks.

Undermount sinks make for a nice clean line from countertop to the bottom of the sink. They are also reputed to be easier to clean. Made of stainless steel and installed underneath the countertop, they are available in a variety of sizes.

Farmhouse sinks, also known as apron sinks, are wide, have a deep bowl, and an exposed front, which makes for easier cleaning of larger pots and pans, etc. Some styles can be retrofitted to existing cabinets, but they may require a different base cabinet to support it. They are also available in a wide range of materials.

Beyond the majority of kitchen sinks – the drop-in, undermount, and the farmhouse – there are other more specialized options. An ‘all-in-one’ sink, for example, is a complete unit for the kitchen, right down to the faucet. Available in a single or double, accessories may include a sink grid, strainer, soap dispenser, and a faucet that sprays.

What about materials and colour?

Colours are changing and becoming more common for 2026. They are not, however, like the off-the-wall colours of years past, but are more subtle. New colours range from sapphire blue to grey – both light and dark – and brown. Black is also taking a starring role among the new neutrals.

Kitchen sink materials are changing too.  Single materials range from stainless steel to cast iron, gunmetal, a granite/quartz composite (a durable blend of stone and acrylic resin), fireclay, copper and gold.

Mixing materials are also showing up. A copper sink may be paired, for example, with stainless or brushed nickel accessories and fixtures. Mixing metals can make for greater flexibility than matching, and is easier to change out when wear and tear occurs.
